City of Los Angeles launches Emergency Tenant Assistance Program.
The program was launched on Tuesday, September 19, and provides assistance to low-income tenants who are still burdened with rent debt; The application period ends on Monday, October 2 at 6:00 p.m. Financial assistance may benefit low-income residents who are still experiencing rent arrears due to the COVID pandemic or other economic hardships. The program is financed with resources from Measure ULA, known as the “mansion tax,” and offers up to six months of help to cover rental payments. To be eligible, the Los Angeles Department of Housing requests that tenants applying to enroll in the program meet some requirements: Be a resident of the city of Los Angeles, regardless of your immigration status. One or more people in the household have experienced a loss of employment, a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or had other financial difficulties between March 2020 to date. Have rent payment owed to your current landlord for any month between April 2020 to date. Current household income is equal to or less than 80% of the area median income. The Los Angeles City Council funded a $150 million plan in August, with Measure ULA, to provide protections for renters as well as boost affordable housing.
