The 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar city by Musaib Iqbal Bhat
Srinagar city reverberated after 34 years today as thousands of Shia Muslims marked their presence in Srinagar's historic streets to participate in the 8th Muharram procession. The historic procession started from the Guru Bazar area of Srinagar city and proceeded peacefully through Budshah Chowk, Maulana azaad Road, and Dalgate area as people mourned the tragic events that took place in Karbala by reciting nowhas and marsiya. It is also pertinent to mention here that the said procession was banned by the then governor Jagmohan and the same was followed by all the parties that made the government till then. It was only yesterday that the ban was lifted by the LG (Manoj Sinha) led government. The permission to carry out the procession was granted from 6am to 8 am only but the procession concluded peacefully at 4 pm.
