India allows Shia mourning procession in Kashmir after three decades

The authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir for the first time in over three decades allowed the processions from the City Centre Srinagar on 8th Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The Muharram processions were banned from the City Centre in 1989 at the outbreak of armed insurgency in the region although Shiites used to bring out processions within localities and in the peripheries.
