The Luminarias take place on the night of January 16, 2023 in San Bartolomé de Pinares, Ávila, Spain. It is a traditional "purifying rite" that is part of the events of the festivities of San Antón, on January 16 and 17.
On January 16 (eve of San Antón) at 21:00 hours is when the bells start ringing. Then all the riders with their horses gather at the door of the Town Hall, next to the parish house.
It is at this moment when the bonfires are lit along the streets of the town and they start to ride through them with the whole retinue of riders. The aim is to purify the animals with the smoke from the bonfires. For an hour you can watch the riders as they go through the "luminarias".
