India: Santragachi Jheel remains a fragile urban haven for migratory birds during winter

Biswarup Ganguly

Despite being surrounded by urban sprawl, Santragachi Jheel continues to serve as a winter haven for migratory birds. However, this year, fewer birds have arrived, with much of the wetland’s surface still covered by water hyacinth. Lesser Whistling Ducks dominate the avian visitors, along with a few smaller species. Efforts are underway to clear parts of the hyacinth and restore the ecosystem during the peak migration season. This unique blend of bustling city life and tranquil natural beauty draws birdwatchers, highlighting the importance of conserving this fragile urban sanctuary.
