Kashmir tourism under threat as snowfall Dwindles by Mohammad Abu Bakar
The picturesque valley of Kashmir, known for its breathtaking landscapes and snowy winters, is now facing the adverse consequences of climate change. Gulmarg, a popular tourist destination and a haven for winter sports enthusiasts, is currently grappling with a severe dry spell, resulting in a lack of snowfall and posing significant challenges for the local economy and tourism industry.
Normally bustling with skiers enjoying training sessions in January, the meadow stands empty and silent this year. The chairlifts and snow-beaters remain idle, unable to operate. Instead of the usual four to six feet of accumulated snow that delighted visitors, only patches of melting snow can be seen.
The lack of snowfall not only affects the tourism industry but also poses a threat to the region's fragile ecosystem. The snow acts as a natural water reservoir, ensuring a steady water supply for the surrounding areas during the summer months. The absence of snowfall could lead to water scarcity and impact agriculture, wildlife, and the overall biodiversity of the region.
