Pagani: Bonfire of Saint Lucia by Pasquale Senatore
On the eve of the day of Saint Lucia, on December 13, there is a celebration in front of the church of the Body of Christ with dances and songs in the heat of the fire . It’s an ancient tradition of rural communities in southern Italy. It’s called "Focarina di Santa Lucia". The day of Saint Lucia, also called the Feast of Saint Lucia, is a Christian feast observed on December 13.His feast coincided with the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year before the reforms of the calendar. The day of Saint Lucia is seen as a precursor of the Christmas period, indicating the arrival of the Light of Christ in the calendar on Christmas Day. The burning fire gives light on the darkest day of the year for hours of darkness greater than those of light. The statue of Saint Lucia is placed on the churchyard of the Church and venerated by the faithful.
