India: Hindu devotees offer prayers on Mahalaya by Avijit Ghosh
Hindu devotees pray and take holy dip in Ganges to offer homage to their ancestors on 19th September, 2017 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The offering of the prayer is described in Hindu mythology as Tarpana. Mahalaya, which marks the beginning of Devi-Paksha and the end of the Pitri-Paksha. According to Hindu Mythology Mahalaya is the day when Gods created Goddess Durga to destroy the demon king Mahisashura. It is believed that one’s ancestors will be eagerly awaiting for Tarpana on the day of Mahalaya.
