48th anniversary of the students uprising at the Polytechnic against the Colonel's junta of 1973 by Dimitrios Karvountzis
The traditional march to the American Embassy has ended late Wednesday afternoon in the memory of the 48 years since the student uprising at the Polytechnic.
Strong forces of Greek Police has remained on alert in the area of Exarcheia and in the building of the National Technical University of Athens.
According to police sources, the participants in the march ranged between 15,000 - 20,000 people.
The "uprising" of the Polytechnic was a massive and dynamic manifestation of popular opposition to the regime of the Colonel's junta that took place in Greece in November 1973. The uprising began on November 14 with the occupation of the Athens Technical University by students. This escalated into an anti-junta uprising, culminating in bloodshed on the morning of November 17, following a series of events. The beginning was made with the entry of a tank at the Polytechnic and the reinstatement of the relevant military law that prohibited the gatherings and circulation in Athens and Thessaloniki.
