Dhaka: Protests erupt over writer Mushtaq's death in jail by MD Saiful Amin
Students and people gathered at Shahbag today to protest against the death of arrested in digital security act Writer Mushtaq Ahmed at central jail yesterday.
Protesters said Bangladeshi authorities should conduct a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the death of writer and commentator Mushtaq Ahmed in custody, and should release jailed political cartoonist Kabir Kishore unconditionally and investigate claims that he was subjected to physical abuse in custody.
Ahmed was pronounced dead on arrival at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital yesterday, 25 February in the central city of Gazipur, after being transported from the Kashimpur Jail; he had been held since May for allegedly violating the country’s Digital Security Act.
Earlier this month, Ahmed and Kishore were formally charged under the Digital Security Act, authorities accuse the two of spreading rumors and misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic on Facebook.
