India: Transit camp of Gangasagar pilgrimage by Santarpan Roy
Gangasagar Mela is a holy annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims. This takes place at Sagar Island located at the confluence of river Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. The island becomes a major Hindu pilgrimage site because an ancient holy Hindu monk named Kapil Muni once lived there. Kolkata is the nearest city to Sagar Island. So, the pilgrims stay at the Government made transit camp in Kolkata before going to the holy place. They leave Kolkata before the day of 'Makar Sankranti'(14 January) and on the day of 'Makar Sankranti' pilgrims take a holy dip at that confluence.
