NY: NYS Senate rent hearing by Gabriele Holtermann-Gorden
New York State Senators held a hearing on rent regulations and tenant protection at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York.
The hearing, one of four, came before the New York State Legislature is set to vote on a package of bills which are going to renews and strengthen tenants rights. At the hearing, the panel of New York State Senators Liz Krueger, Julia Salazar, Robert Jackson, Zellnor Myrie, Gustavo Rivera, Michael Gianaris, John C. Liu, and Brian Kavanaugh, all Democrats listened to testimonies from tenants who have been subjected to harassment from landlords or live in deplorable conditions. Before the hearing tenants and the construction industry held two separate press conferences. The construction industry claims that the proposed tenant rights bills would lead to mass layoffs of construction workers and force companies out of business. The encounter of both groups after the press conferences lead to lively discussions between the two groups.
