NY: Anti-semitic attack press conference by Gabriele Holtermann-Gorden
Elected officials and members of the Jewish Community came together at the Kingsway Jewish Center in Brooklyn to denounce the steep rise in antisemitic attacks in New York City.
New York City, home to the largest Jewish community outside of Israel, has already experienced a steep rise in hate since the beginning of the year; so far 47 hate crimes have been reported and 2/3 of those crimes targeted the Jewish community.
Mayor de Blasio was adamant that the voices of hate need to be confronted and warned that hate crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law. He urged New Yorkers to report hate crimes to the authorities.
Mayor de Blasio, "This is not a small thing, people right here in this community in Brooklyn have seen in their own lives what happens when antisemitism goes unchecked, when people stay silent, when the authorities don't do anything. In countries that families here came from, they watched opportunism that led to horrifying results. New York City will never be silent in the face of hatred."
