Syrian White Helmets receive Tipperary Peace Prize by John Rooney
The Tipperary International Peace Award was presented to Nedal Izddenm a member of the Syria Civil Defense, a group also known as the White Helmets, today. The White Helmets have saved more than 100,000 people, while 192 of the unarmed volunteers have lost their lives. Responding to news of the selection, a spokesperson for the group said: “We are very happy to receive this peace prize because it means that there are still people around the world who support our mission to protect lives, and that the voices for peace are much stronger than the voices for war.”
Since 1984, the Tipperary Peace Convention has given the award to individuals or organisations who have “made a particularly noteworthy contribution to the peacemaking process”
The Tipperary Peace prize ranks as Ireland’s outstanding award for humanitarian work.
It was presented to former US Secretary of State John Kerry last year
