Italy: "The pole of soap" tradition of mid-August by Paola Visone
August 15 is celebrated the Virgin Mary Assumption with the competition that takes place during the so-called pole of soap. Over one hundred years of history for the "soap pole" ("pennone", in dialect Pozzuoli), which was held the day of August on Caligula dock of Pozzuoli. A popular tradition, organized every year by the fishermen of Pozzuoli. The event consists of three flags in the race to fixed ends of a pole covered with soap and facing the sea, in order to collect them before they fall into the water. The "pennone" and has collected a great success by all puteolana citizenship. In the evening the anniversary is celebrated with a procession in honor of Our Lady and a show of fireworks.
