Spain: Newborn European roe deer in Soria by Jorge Sanz
The females of roe deer has the reproductive strategy of embryonic diapause (delayed implantation). In embryonic diapause, the embryo does not immediately implant in the uterus after sexual reproduction and is maintained in a state of dormancy. Females use this mechanism to time the birth of their offspring for favorable metabolic and environmental conditions.
