Spain: Transhumance festival in Soria by Jorge Sanz
Livestock transhumance is a millenary tradition for herders to find better weather conditions and natural pasture during winter and summer for their animals. Shepherds led a flock of 1,200 sheep through the streets of Soria, north of Spain, in defense of ancient grazing, to campaign in favour of seasonal migration and promote the conservation of the 'cañadas' (ancient paths of livestock transhumance). The number of flocks of sheep in this Spanish province have declined between a 60-80% in the last two decades due to advanced age of the shepherds and ranchers, and the high production costs.
