Disciples of the schoolmaster Luang Phor Pern receive a protective tattoo on his back during the annual Wat Bang Phra Tattoo Festival in Nakhon Chaisi (west of Bangkok. Thousands of Buddhist devotees gathered at the Wat Bang Phra Temple every year, some of the participants go into a trance-like state where they are 'possessed' by the spirit of an animal which is then tattooed onto their skin by monks to protect against evil spirits and bad luck.
