Spain: Madrid Celebrates 'Entierro de la Sardina' by Jorge Sanz García
Madrid celebrated the satirical ceremony 'El Entierro de la Sardina' (the burial of the sardine), which simulates a burial procession of a sardine which gets solemnly paraded around the streets of the Spanish capital in a coffin. This ancient ceremony, the first image of this “burial” was painted by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya between 1812 and 1819, is based on the belief of burying, symbolically, our past in the hopes of creating a better and more fruitful future.
