Italy: National Day for the victims of immigration by Giuseppe Ciccia
The Italian Republic recognises 3 October as National Day in memory of the victims of immigration, commemorating those “who lost their lives trying to emigrate towards our country to escape wars, persecution and poverty”. The day is chosen to pay respect to the 366 migrants who drowned on October 3 2012 in the Mediterranean in view of the Sicilian Island of Lampedusa.
